Total protection for orcas and dolphins in SVG waters
The SVGPF is pleased to congratulate the Government on taking another giant leap in conservation by deciding to provide full legislative protection for orcas and dolphins as of May 2017.
The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is a signatory to the Cartagena Convention and its Protocol Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) since 1991 which protects whales and dolphins. The move to protect orcas and dolphins is in line with SVG’s international commitments under the SPAW protocol. The Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been making huge strides in conservation recently. On January 1st 2017 the Government introduced total protection of sea turtles and their eggs, making it the first country in the OECS to provide the legal framework for a turtle sanctuary. Further, the Government banned styrofoam effective May 2017.
